Public Works Inspector Job Description
Description of Duties:
• Employee may inspect and oversee construction of Public Works (roads, utilities, recreation areas) and/or private commercial and residential sites to ensure that procedures and materials comply with plans and specifications.
• Employee may measure distances to verify accuracy of dimensions of installations and layouts.
• Employee may observe work in progress to ensure that procedures followed and materials used conform to specifications, and examine workmanship of finished installations for conformity to standard and approves installation. Employee may also record quantities of materials received or used during specified periods.
• Employee may interpret blueprints and specifications for contractor and discusses deviations from specified construction procedures to ensure compliance with regulations governing construction.
• Office work may include maintaining daily log of construction and inspection activities and progress reports. Compute monthly estimates of work completed and makes recommendations for payment to contractors. Prepare daily activity reports and compiles same. Prepare reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Employee will make field inspections of all sitework such as curbs, roads, water lines, sanitary sewer lines, sidewalks, and storm drains and appurtenances thereto and checks the quality and amount of work done. Employee may also investigate complaints received regarding public works construction activities and recommends appropriate remedial action.
• Employee will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Proficiency with MS Office, Excel and AutoCAD required. Proficiency with NJDOT PMRS software a plus.
Salary range may be $55,000 – $70,000 a year depending on education and experience.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Associates or Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or Engineering or a similar field of study is required.
WORK EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of experience in the construction or installation of roads, water mains, sewer lines, or similar public works construction activities involving the reading and interpretation of blueprints, plans, specifications, and engineering drawings or surveying techniques directly related to public works construction.
